Short & clear

Certified Punjabi translations by sworn, native-speaker translators.

Punjabi is written in two entirely different scripts — ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ (Gurmukhi) in India, شاہ مکھی (Shahmukhi, Perso-Arabic, right-to-left) in Pakistan — and it is the one tonal language of South Asia. Which script your document needs depends on the target country and has to be settled before the first word, because the wrong script makes the translation unusable. Whether it is a birth certificate for a German registry office, a diploma for recognition, a contract for a partner in Lahore or Amritsar, or documentation for an English-language project: the work is done by native Punjabi specialists with a proven field.

We work in both directions and both pairings. Punjabi ⇄ German is what German authorities, courts and local partners need — including certified translations, names (Singh/Kaur) matched to the passport and Lakh/Crore amounts converted correctly. Punjabi ⇄ English covers international life in Germany: applications, employer paperwork, contracts and documentation that circulate in English.

Who it's for

Living in Germany, thinking in more than one language.

Most people who search for this in English are already fluent Punjabi speakers dealing with a German system — or internationals who use English as the working language. Both are covered, in Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi.

Punjabi → German, for the authorities

Birth, marriage and name-change certificates, driving licences, diplomas and police records for a registry office (Standesamt), the immigration office or recognition of qualifications. Issued in Gurmukhi (from India), they need a certified German translation with Singh/Kaur assigned correctly and the name matched exactly to your passport.

Punjabi ⇄ English, for international life

Job applications, employment contracts, references and company documents that your employer, university or a partner abroad expects in English rather than German. Same specialists, same care with the script, tones and terminology.

German → Punjabi, for home

German certificates, contracts, powers of attorney and rulings that have to be presented to authorities, courts or family in India or Pakistan — in Gurmukhi for India or Shahmukhi for Pakistan, in the form that is valid there.

Business across borders

Companies trading with partners in Amritsar or Lahore, or teams that run in English while the paperwork is German or Punjabi. We assign a specialist for the direction, target script and field you actually need, not a one-size-fits-all pair.

Language & script

Two scripts, three tones — the target script comes first.

Punjabi is written in two different scripts. In India it uses ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ (Gurmukhi, left-to-right); in Pakistan شاہ مکھی (Shahmukhi, a Perso-Arabic script written right-to-left, usually in the Nastaliq style with context-dependent letter forms and ligatures). Both write the same language but look completely different and serve different countries — so the first question of every project is: Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi? Punjabi is also the only tonal Indo-Aryan language: three tones distinguish word meanings, which matters for transcription and subtitles. It has grammatical gender, politeness levels (ਤੁਸੀਂ vs ਤੂੰ) and the Singh/Kaur naming convention, and numbers follow the Indian Lakh/Crore system.

For authorities the decisive points are the target script and the names: Singh (ਸਿੰਘ) and Kaur (ਕੌਰ) are fixed name components, not Western surnames, and every spelling is matched to the passport. For official use, an authorised translator issues a certified translation; note that an apostille from India or Pakistan has no effect before German authorities, because Germany objected to both accessions to the Hague Convention — the recognition path is explained below.

Quality you only notice at the receiving end

What only a native Punjabi specialist catches.

With Punjabi, half the translation is decided before the first word — at the script question. These pitfalls separate a native professional translation from one passed through. Each is specific to Punjabi and demonstrable.

Typical pitfalls in Punjabi translation and how a specialist resolves them
PitfallWhy it goes wrongHow the FÜD solves it
The wrong script: Gurmukhi vs ShahmukhiPunjabi is written in Gurmukhi in India (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ) and Shahmukhi in Pakistan (پنجابی, right-to-left). Deliver the wrong script and the document is simply unusable in the target country — no matter how good the text is.The target script is settled before the project starts (by target country and recipient) and typeset by a native speaker versed in that script.
Singh/Kaur treated as a surnameBy Sikh convention many men carry the name ਸਿੰਘ (Singh) and women ਕੌਰ (Kaur) — this is not a Western family name. Filed as a surname on a form, it produces mix-ups and misassignment at authorities.Name components are assigned correctly, explained where needed and matched against the passport and ID documents.
Tone ignored (the only tonal one)Punjabi is the only tonal Indo-Aryan language: three tones distinguish words, marked in Gurmukhi partly through the ਘ ਝ ਢ series and . For transcription, subtitles and pronunciation notes the tone carries meaning.Native speakers handle tone-relevant spellings correctly; in transcription and subtitling the meaning is transferred, not just the sound.
Shahmukhi falls apart (RTL / Nastaliq)Shahmukhi is a connected right-to-left script, usually in Nastaliq, with context-dependent letter forms and ligatures. The wrong font or careless copy-paste breaks words apart or flips the direction. We deliver print-ready Shahmukhi with correct shaping, RTL flow and checked fonts — the file "sits".
Gender & politeness agreementPunjabi inflects verbs and adjectives for gender and marks respect (ਤੁਸੀਂ vs ਤੂੰ). The wrong gender or the wrong level is a factual error in certificates and letters.Native speakers carry gender and politeness agreement through and reconcile them with the personal data and the document type.
Lakh/Crore & Gurmukhi digitsAmounts follow the Indian system (੫,੦੦,੦੦੦ = five Lakh = 500,000) and digits may appear in Gurmukhi (੦੧੨). Copied one-to-one, the sum or the file number no longer matches.Amounts and digits are converted into the German convention and checked digit by digit against the original.
Transliteration diacritics lost (ੰ, ਼)Gurmukhi marks nasalisation and derived sounds with signs such as Tippi () and Pairin Bindi (). If they are dropped in transliteration, the word and the name change.Diacritics are mapped systematically in Latin transliteration and proper names aligned to the official spelling.

Why the script question comes first

With Punjabi a translation can be linguistically perfect and still worthless — if it is in the wrong script. Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi serve different countries; the choice falls before the first word. Add name conventions, tones and number formats, and none of these is a simple spelling mistake — most survive any spell-check and only surface at the receiving end: the registry office, the authority in India or Pakistan, the recognition body. That is exactly where native professional translation earns its place.

First the target script — Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi — then everything else.

So: the script settled in advance, native speakers with a field, and names (Singh/Kaur) assigned correctly.

Certification & recognition

Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi — and what counts where.

For submission to German authorities and courts, a court-authorised translator (in German, ermächtigter Übersetzer, publicly authorised under German state law) produces a certified translation with stamp, signature and certification note — recognised nationwide, and revised under the DIN EN ISO 17100 four-eyes process by a native speaker.

Here Punjab differs from most countries of origin: India and Pakistan did accede to the Hague Apostille Convention, but Germany objected to both accessions — between Germany and these states it is therefore not applicable. An apostille issued in New Delhi or Islamabad gives your document no legal force in Germany, and India's legalisation was discontinued in 2000. In its place comes verification by administrative assistance: the German authority asks the embassy in New Delhi (for India) or in Islamabad, and the Consulate General in Karachi (for Pakistan), to check authenticity and content on the ground — commissioned and carried out by authority and mission, not by the translation agency. Together with the right target script (Gurmukhi for India, Shahmukhi for Pakistan) our part is the complete, certified German version — with every stamp, seal and handwritten note, since that is exactly what the check works from.

Use cases

Punjabi to German translation: three typical cases from practice.

Target country, script and authority decide the form and certification. Three common jobs — from the starting point to the result.

Registry office & family

Civil-status certificate Punjabi → German (Gurmukhi)

Starting point
For a marriage or naturalisation, a civil-status certificate from Indian Punjab in Gurmukhi is needed in German — with the name in its own script.
Process
An authorised translator renders the certificate, assigns Singh/Kaur correctly as name components and converts digits and amounts unambiguously; the certification note makes it ready for the authority.
Result
A certified translation the registry office accepts — names correctly assigned, data identical to the ID, no follow-up query.

Target country Pakistan

Certificates German → Punjabi (Shahmukhi)

Starting point
For a recipient in Pakistan's Punjab province, German certificates are to be provided in Punjabi in Shahmukhi.
Process
A native speaker typesets the text print-ready in Shahmukhi (RTL, Nastaliq), chooses the right register and keeps the terminology consistent.
Result
A document that is correctly legible in the target country — the right script, the right flow, the right register.

Careers & recognition

Diploma & CV Punjabi → English

Starting point
A professional from Punjab applies to an international employer or programme in Germany that works in English, and needs a diploma, references and CV rendered accurately.
Process
Degrees, subjects and titles stay in the original with an explanatory equivalent; the target script is settled by use, names are transliterated consistently and Singh/Kaur assigned correctly.
Result
Documents an English-speaking employer can place correctly — without misrepresenting a foreign qualification.

FAQ

Punjabi translation – frequently asked questions.

Do you translate both Punjabi to German and Punjabi to English?

Yes. Punjabi ⇄ German is the usual pairing for German authorities, courts and business partners; Punjabi ⇄ English covers international contexts – applications, contracts and documentation exchanged in English. A native-speaker specialist versed in the required script is assigned to each direction.

Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi – which script do I need?

It depends on the target country: Gurmukhi for India, Shahmukhi (a Perso-Arabic, right-to-left script) for Pakistan. We settle the target script before the project starts, because the wrong script makes the document unusable in the target country – however good the text is.

How are Punjabi names like Singh and Kaur handled for a German registry office?

By Sikh convention Singh (for many men) and Kaur (for many women) are fixed name components, not Western surnames. We assign the name parts correctly, explain them where needed and match the spelling exactly to your passport, so the document is accepted without a query.

Can you provide a certified Punjabi translation recognised in Germany?

Yes. For certificates, diplomas and official documents an authorised translator (ermächtigter Übersetzer, authorised by a German court under state law) issues a certified translation with a certification note, recognised by German authorities and courts nationwide.

Do India and Pakistan need an apostille as well?

No. Germany objected to the accession of both India and Pakistan to the Hague Apostille Convention, so between Germany and these states it does not apply; an apostille from New Delhi or Islamabad has no effect in Germany, and India's legalisation was discontinued in 2000. Instead the German authority has the document verified through the embassy by way of administrative assistance. We supply the complete certified translation for it; the check itself is carried out by the authority and the mission.

What does a Punjabi translation cost?

The price depends on volume, field, direction, target script and deadline. After a brief review we name a binding fixed price; standard certificates are usually a flat fee per document, from € 1.09 per standard line.
We didn't even know at first that Punjabi has two scripts. Here the right one — Shahmukhi for Pakistan — was settled from the start, and the names were assigned correctly instead of filed as a surname.

Work with us

Already a native Punjabi speaker? Become an authorised translator.

Our Punjabi translations are produced by native-speaker specialists — the reason German authorities, universities and courts accept them without queries. Beyond the language itself, that rests on German at C2 level, a specialist field the translator can defend, and — for certified work — court authorisation. If you bring that combination rather than bilingualism alone, we work with Punjabi translators employed and freelance, and the way in is also open through an internship.

The path

German to C2, plus a field

Native Punjabi is your starting capital; the market rewards what you build on top. German at C2 — the level at which you read a German ruling or medical report without hesitation — is the real gate, because certified work means rendering official German with precision, not just understanding it. Add a field you can defend (law, medicine, technology, finance) and the terminology that comes with it, plus fluency in the target script your recipients use. That combination, not language alone, is what a registry office or an authority in India or Pakistan actually relies on.

Why it holds up

Authorisation, and the expertise behind it

For certified translations you apply to the competent Regional Court (Landgericht) to be authorised under state law. And Punjabi is exacting, specialist work: it is written in two scripts — Gurmukhi in India, Perso-Arabic Shahmukhi in Pakistan — and MT systems routinely fail there, confusing script and variety, while a large, active diaspora keeps demand for certified work steady. Careful human work here is not nostalgia — it is what the receiving authority requires.
